Check Engine Light

Common triggers on petrol MG vehicles include oxygen sensor faults, MAF sensor issues, EGR valve problems, ignition coil failures, and various emissions-related codes. The newer 1.5T turbo engines are generally reliable but the older naturally aspirated 1.5L (in the MG3) can develop oil consumption and timing chain wear at higher mileages. Use SAIC-compatible diagnostic tools (some Launch and Autel scanners include MG/SAIC coverage; otherwise generic OBD-II reads basic powertrain codes).

EV-Specific Warnings (MG ZS EV, MG4)

The MG ZS EV and MG4 are full electric vehicles with their own warning systems – high-voltage battery alerts, motor control faults, charging system issues, and 12V battery warnings. As with all EVs, never attempt high-voltage system work without proper training. The MG ZS EV is generally reliable but has had some software updates pushed via service centres.

Stability Control / ABS

Stability and ABS warnings on MG vehicles typically indicate wheel speed sensor faults, brake light switch failures, or steering angle sensor recalibration needs. The vehicle still drives but safety systems are disabled. The newer i-Smart system (MG’s infotainment) can occasionally throw stability/ABS alerts that are actually communication faults rather than mechanical issues – check for ECM software updates at the service centre.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring

MG uses both direct TPMS (sensors in each wheel) and indirect TPMS (using ABS wheel speed differences) depending on the model. Direct systems require sensor activation/programming after tyre service. Indirect systems require a reset after correctly inflating all four tyres – the procedure is usually a button press in the menu or via a steering wheel control sequence.

Service Light

MG uses a service interval indicator that displays at the appropriate mileage or time interval. After service, the indicator must be reset – on most models via the trip computer menu using button presses with the ignition cycled. i-Smart and Connected Features

MG’s i-Smart system controls many vehicle functions and connects to a smartphone app. Software glitches in i-Smart can sometimes manifest as dashboard warnings or feature failures. A system reset (typically holding the volume button or following a menu sequence) often resolves transient issues. Persistent issues may need a software update at the dealer.

Warranty Considerations

MG offers a generous warranty in Australia (currently 7 years/unlimited km on the petrol range, 7 years/160,000 km on EVs). For new vehicles still under warranty, dashboard warnings should typically be addressed at an MG dealer to maintain warranty coverage. Out-of-warranty vehicles can be serviced by independent specialists familiar with the brand.
