Signs of a Coolant Leak

Coolant loss between top-ups (should be near zero for a healthy system), a sweet chemical smell (especially through the cabin vents, suggesting a heater core leak), visible drips or puddles under the vehicle (coolant is usually green, orange, pink, or yellow – not to be confused with clear water condensate from AC operation), white steam from the exhaust once the engine is warm (suggesting coolant burning in the combustion chamber), and rising temperature gauge readings especially in traffic or on hills. Any of these warrants an immediate inspection.

External Leak Sources

Common external leak points include hoses (especially where they connect to the radiator, engine, or heater core – inspect for cracks, bulges, or dampness), the radiator itself (small leaks show as crusty white or coloured residue on the fins or plastic tank seams), the water pump (a weep hole underneath drips when the seal fails – a common failure at 100,000+ km), the thermostat housing (gaskets deteriorate and leak, especially on plastic housings which crack with age), and the heater core (leaks show as wet carpets in the passenger footwell or fogged windscreen).

Also check hose clamps for looseness (spring-type clamps lose tension over time), and inspect the overflow tank for cracks (particularly around the neck where the cap seats).

Internal Leaks

More serious are internal leaks where coolant escapes into the engine oil or combustion chambers. Symptoms include white or greyish sludge under the oil filler cap (coolant emulsifying with oil), a milky appearance in the engine oil on the dipstick, chocolate-milk-coloured oil, continuous white steam from the exhaust (with a sweet smell) after the engine is warm, coolant that rises then falls in the overflow tank without external leaks, and constantly needing to top up coolant without visible drips.

Internal leaks usually indicate a blown head gasket, cracked head, or in worse cases a cracked engine block. These require immediate attention – continuing to drive with an internal coolant leak destroys the engine quickly.

Pressure Testing

The most effective way to find a slow leak is a cooling system pressure test. A hand pump kit (available for around $80-150) attaches in place of the radiator cap and pressurises the system to its normal operating pressure. Watch for leaks with the engine cold and system pressurised – external leaks become obvious as coolant weeps or drips from the source. Chemical block-check kits detect combustion gases in the coolant (indicating a head gasket leak) by changing colour when combustion products are present.

UV Dye Testing

For elusive leaks, coolant-safe UV dye is added to the system and the engine run for a day or two. The dye glows bright green or yellow under UV light, making even tiny leaks visible. This is particularly useful for slow leaks around plastic manifolds, timing covers, or areas hidden by covers where drips run down before they can be traced.

Air Conditioning Condensate is Not a Leak

Clear water dripping under the vehicle after AC use is normal – it is condensation from the evaporator draining. If you see clear water only under the passenger side while parked after driving with the AC on, that is expected. Coolant looks distinctly different (colour, slightly slimy or sticky feel, sweet smell).
