How to Diagnose Common Holden Dashboard Warning Lights

Holden warning systems vary depending on the platform – early Commodores use GM-developed systems, the Cruze and Captiva use Daewoo-derived electronics, and later Astras and Insignias use Opel/Vauxhall systems. Check Engine Light Triggers

Common triggers across the Holden range include misfire codes (P0301-P0306) caused by aging coil packs and spark plugs, oxygen sensor faults (P0130 series), the well-known thermostat housing leak on Cruze 1.4 turbo (a plastic housing that warps and leaks), timing chain stretch on the Cruze 1.4T causing P0008/P0017 timing correlation codes, valve cover gasket leaks on Cruze, and turbo and EGR issues on the Colorado 2.8 Duramax diesel. The VE/VF Commodore L77/LFX V6 and L98/LS3 V8 engines are generally robust but suffer from oil consumption issues on some V6 models.

Holden vehicles can be diagnosed with most generic OBD-II scanners for basic powertrain codes, but for full functionality including BCM (Body Control Module), HVAC, and SRS access you need a GM-capable scanner like Tech 2, MDI, or compatible aftermarket tool with GM database support.

Service Light and Oil Life

Holden uses GM’s Oil Life Monitor system on Commodore, Cruze, and Trax. Rather than a fixed kilometre interval, the system calculates remaining oil life based on driving conditions – short trips, hot weather, and high RPM operation reduce remaining life faster than gentle highway driving. After an oil change, the system must be reset through the trip computer or with a scan tool. Procedure is in your workshop manual but typically involves holding the trip reset button while pressing the accelerator three times within 5 seconds.

ABS / Traction Control / ESC

Wheel speed sensor faults are extremely common on older Holdens, particularly the Commodore. The sensors corrode over time, especially in coastal and humid climates. Front wheel speed sensors usually fail first because they sit in the path of road spray. ABS module failures also occur on aging Commodores – if multiple wheel speed circuits show faults simultaneously, the issue is usually the module rather than multiple sensors failing together.

Charging System Warnings

Battery and alternator warnings on later Commodores can be triggered by the BCI (Battery Current Indicator) sensor on the negative battery terminal – if it fails or has a poor connection, the system thinks the battery is failing even when it is fine. Always inspect the BCI sensor connection before condemning the battery or alternator on a VE/VF Commodore.

Colorado Specific Issues

The Holden Colorado 2.8 Duramax has well-known issues including DPF blockage on stop-start trips, EGR cooler failures (causing white smoke and coolant loss), and the timing chain on early models. Trucks used predominantly on short trips never get hot enough to passively regenerate the DPF, leading to repeated active regenerations and eventually a clogged filter requiring forced regeneration or replacement.
