Peugeot vehicles include the 208, 308, 2008, 3008, 5008, and the Partner and Boxer commercial models. They share many components with Citroen and DS within the Stellantis group, and use similar diagnostic conventions. This guide covers the most common Peugeot dashboard warning lights.

Service Light

The spanner icon on Peugeot vehicles indicates that scheduled service is due. After completing the service, the indicator must be reset using a scan tool or via the dashboard menu (the procedure varies by model). Your workshop manual includes the reset procedure for your model year.

Check Engine Light

Common triggers on Peugeot vehicles include timing chain wear on PureTech 3-cylinder engines (a known issue requiring chain replacement), wet timing belt failures on certain 1.2 and 1.5 BlueHDi engines (the belt runs in oil and degrades over time, depositing rubber particles in the oil pickup), DPF blockage and regeneration faults on diesel models, EGR valve carbon buildup, fuel injector failures on common-rail diesels, and AdBlue / SCR system faults. Peugeot uses a mix of standard OBD-II codes and PSA-specific manufacturer codes.

Anti-Pollution Fault

The “Anti-pollution fault” message on Peugeot vehicles is a generic emissions-related warning that can indicate a wide range of issues: oxygen sensor faults, EGR valve problems, DPF issues, fuel injector faults, vacuum leaks, or even loose fuel caps. The vehicle usually still drives but may go into limp mode with reduced power. A scan tool reading is essential to identify the specific cause.

STOP Warning (Red Triangle)

A red STOP warning on Peugeot vehicles indicates a serious fault that requires immediate attention – typically engine overheating, low oil pressure, or charging system failure. Never continue driving with a red STOP warning. Pull over safely, switch off the engine, and investigate or arrange recovery. Driving with low oil pressure for even a short distance can destroy the engine.

BSI / BSM Warnings

BSI (Built-In Systems Interface) is the central control module on Peugeot vehicles – similar to the body control module on other brands. BSI faults can cause a wide range of strange electrical symptoms: random warning lights, electrical accessories not working, intermittent starting issues, and battery drain. The BSM (Built-In Servicing Module) is in the engine bay and houses fuses and relays. Both are common failure points on older Peugeot models, often from water ingress.

Diagnostic Resources

Peugeot vehicles use PSA-specific fault codes best read with a Lexia / DiagBox or compatible scanner. Browse our workshop manual catalogue at mechanicmate.net/shop.
