Renault vehicles include the Megane, Captur, Koleos, Trafic, and Master commercial models. Renault has its own diagnostic conventions and uses a mix of standard OBD-II codes and Renault-specific manufacturer codes. This guide covers the most common Renault dashboard warning lights.

Service Light / Spanner Symbol

The spanner icon on Renault vehicles indicates that scheduled service is due based on either time or mileage. It is a reminder, not a fault. After completing the service, the indicator must be reset using a scan tool or via the dashboard menu (the procedure varies by model). Your workshop manual includes the reset procedure.

Check Engine Light

Common triggers on Renault vehicles include EGR valve faults on diesel models (carbon buildup is a chronic issue), DPF blockage and regeneration faults, turbo wastegate or VGT actuator issues, swirl flap failures (the intake manifold flaps that fail and can be ingested by the engine on certain dCi diesels), and fuel injector failures. Renault uses standard OBD-II codes plus extensive manufacturer-specific codes that are best read with a CLIP scanner or compatible tool.

Injection Fault Warning

The “Injection” warning on Renault diesel models often indicates fuel injector issues – specifically, individual injector flow rate faults or failed injector body seals. On common-rail diesels, fuel return testing identifies which injector is leaking back excessive fuel. This is a precision repair that often requires a Renault diagnostic tool to read injector trim codes and program new injector codes after replacement.

ESP Warning

ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) warnings on Renault vehicles typically indicate wheel speed sensor faults (usually the front sensors that get exposed to road grit and water), steering angle sensor recalibration needs, brake light switch failures, or yaw rate sensor issues. The standard brakes still work but stability control and traction control are disabled.

Card Reader / Keycard Warning

Renault uses a unique keycard system on many models. Warnings related to the keycard usually indicate a low keycard battery (the keycard contains a small battery that can be replaced), a faulty card reader in the dashboard, or a keycard antenna issue. Symptoms include the vehicle not recognising the card, intermittent starting failures, or the dashboard displaying a card warning.

Diagnostic Resources

Renault vehicles use extensive manufacturer-specific fault codes. A CLIP or compatible Renault scanner provides full diagnostic access. Browse our workshop manual catalogue at mechanicmate.net/shop.
