Sway bar links (also called stabiliser links or end links) connect the sway bar to the suspension control arms or struts. They transfer force from one side of the suspension to the other, helping the sway bar reduce body roll in corners. When they wear out, you get clunking noises over bumps and reduced cornering stability. Replacement is one of the simplest suspension jobs and a common DIY project.
What Sway Bar Links Do
The sway bar (also called the anti-roll bar) is a torsion spring that runs across the front and sometimes the rear of the vehicle. When the body rolls in a corner, the bar twists and pushes the inside wheel down to keep the vehicle level. The sway bar links are the connecting rods that transfer suspension movement to the bar – one link per side. They have a small ball joint at each end, allowing them to swivel as the suspension moves up and down.
Symptoms of Worn Sway Bar Links
A distinct clunking or rattling noise over small bumps and rough roads, most noticeable at low speed. Loose feeling in corners and increased body roll. Visible damage when inspecting – torn rubber boots at the ball joints (which lets dirt and water destroy the joint), excessive play when you grab the link and wiggle it, completely separated links where the ball joint has failed, or rusted and corroded ends. The clunking noise from worn links is often mistaken for worn struts or ball joints, but it is much cheaper to fix.
Inspection Method
Raise the front of the vehicle and let the suspension hang freely. Grab each sway bar link and try to move it – there should be no detectable play or clunking. With the wheels on the ground, push down hard on each corner of the vehicle. A worn link will produce an audible clunk as the suspension cycles. The most reliable test is to remove the link entirely and check the ball joints by hand – they should rotate smoothly with no binding and have no axial play.
Replacement Procedure
Raise the front of the vehicle and support on jack stands. Remove the wheel for easier access. Locate the sway bar link – it connects the horizontal sway bar to the strut or lower control arm. It has a ball joint at each end with a locknut securing it. Use a spanner to hold the ball stud from rotating while you loosen the nut with a socket. Most ball studs have a small hex socket on the end specifically so you can hold them stationary while loosening the nut.
If the stud spins freely in the ball joint (common with badly worn links), conventional methods will not work. Use an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel or a Dremel to cut through the old link. Be careful not to damage the sway bar or strut. With the link removed, install the new link in the same orientation. Tighten the locknuts to specification – typically 50 to 70 Nm for most passenger vehicles, but check your workshop manual. Refit the wheel and repeat for the other side.
Always Replace in Pairs
Sway bar links should always be replaced in pairs since both sides wear at similar rates. If one is worn enough to make noise, the other is not far behind. Replacing only one side leaves the vehicle with mismatched components that wear unevenly and can cause handling imbalance.
Rear Sway Bar Links
If your vehicle has a rear sway bar (most do, but some smaller cars do not), it has its own pair of links replaced with the same procedure. Rear links often last longer than front links because the rear suspension takes less abuse, but they should be inspected at every service.
OEM vs Aftermarket
OEM sway bar links are typically expensive and last well. Quality aftermarket brands (Moog, Lemforder, FAG, MEYLE) are usually fine and often cheaper. Avoid the cheapest unbranded links from generic auto parts retailers – they often fail within months. The savings are not worth the wasted labour of doing the job twice.
