Volvo vehicles are well-known for safety, build quality, and a distinct set of electronic warning messages. The current lineup in Australia includes the XC40, XC60, XC90, and the S60/V60 saloons and wagons. This guide covers the most common Volvo dashboard warning lights and their typical causes.

Check Engine Light

Common triggers on Volvo vehicles include PCV oil trap failures (a chronic issue on older 5-cylinder Volvo engines), turbo wastegate actuator faults, EGR cooler failures on diesel models, ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) failures on older models (the famous “throttle body recall” era), and oxygen sensor failures. Volvo uses standard OBD-II codes plus extensive Volvo-specific manufacturer codes that are best read with a Volvo-compatible scanner like VIDA.

Service Reminder

Volvo’s service reminder system displays “Time for Regular Service” or similar messages when the manufacturer-specified service is due. This is not a fault – it is a reminder. After completing the service, the message must be reset using a scan tool or via the dashboard menu (the procedure varies by model year). Your workshop manual includes the reset procedure for your specific model.

Anti-Skid Service Required

This message indicates a fault in the stability control / DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) system. Common causes are wheel speed sensor failures, steering angle sensor faults requiring recalibration after alignment work or battery disconnection, brake light switch failures, or yaw rate sensor issues. The standard brakes still work but anti-skid and traction control are disabled until the fault is resolved.

Brake Failure / Brake System Service Required

This warning can indicate low brake fluid level (the most common cause – check the reservoir before assuming the worst), worn brake pads triggering the wear sensor, or an ABS / brake pressure sensor fault. Volvo uses brake pad wear sensors that trigger a dashboard warning when the pads need replacement, which is a useful early warning compared to the metal-on-metal squeal indicators on many other vehicles.

City Safety / Pilot Assist Warnings

Volvo’s City Safety automatic emergency braking and Pilot Assist driver aids depend on the front camera and radar sensors. Warnings appear when these sensors are obstructed, dirty, blocked by snow or mud, or have failed. Cleaning the windscreen in front of the camera and the radar emitter in the front grille usually clears these warnings. Persistent warnings indicate a calibration or sensor failure.

Diagnostic Resources

Volvo vehicles use extensive manufacturer-specific fault codes. A Volvo-compatible scanner provides the best diagnostic access. Browse our workshop manual catalogue at mechanicmate.net/shop.
