Audi vehicles share much of their underlying engineering with Volkswagen Group but have their own set of dashboard warnings and known issues. This guide covers the most common Audi-specific dashboard warning lights and how to approach diagnosis on A3, A4, A6, Q3, Q5, and Q7 models sold in Australia.
EPC Warning Light
Like other VW Group vehicles, Audi uses the EPC (Electronic Power Control) warning light for throttle system faults. Common causes include throttle body failure, brake light switch faults (the EPC monitors this), accelerator pedal sensor issues, and wiring problems. The EPC light usually appears with the check engine light and may put the vehicle into limp mode. See our VW dashboard guide for related diagnosis – the same procedures apply.
Check Engine Light
Common triggers on Audi vehicles include carbon buildup on intake valves (a chronic issue with FSI and TFSI direct injection engines), timing chain tensioner failure (early 2.0 TFSI engines), oil consumption codes (some 2.0 TFSI engines have known piston ring issues), turbo wastegate actuator faults, and PCV valve failures causing rough idle. Audi uses VAG fault codes that are best read with a VCDS or VAG-compatible diagnostic tool.
quattro / AWD Warning
Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system has its own warning indicator. A quattro fault warning can indicate a Haldex coupling issue (on transversely mounted engine models like A3 and Q3), a centre differential fault (on longitudinally mounted models like A4 and A6), wheel speed sensor problems, or a control module fault. Haldex couplings on quattro models require regular fluid changes (every 60,000 km on most models) – skipping these is a common cause of quattro warnings and clutch pack damage.
S tronic / DSG Warning
Audi’s S tronic dual-clutch transmission is essentially a rebadged DSG. Warnings indicate transmission faults, often caused by low or degraded transmission fluid, mechatronic unit failure, or clutch pack wear. S tronic fluid changes every 60,000 km are essential maintenance that many owners skip.
Adaptive Suspension Warnings
Audi models with adaptive air suspension (some A6, A8, Q7 variants) display warnings when the system detects faults. Common causes include leaking air struts, compressor failure, height sensor issues, or valve block faults. As with other air suspension systems, addressing leaks early prevents secondary compressor damage.
Diagnostic Resources
Audi vehicles use extensive VAG-specific fault codes. A VCDS or VAG-compatible scanner provides the best diagnostic access. Browse our workshop manual catalogue at mechanicmate.net/shop.
