Getting these numbers right prevents both underfilling (which damages components) and overfilling (which wastes fluid and can cause its own problems).

Where to Find the Tables

Fluid capacities are typically located in the Specifications section near the front of the workshop manual, or in the maintenance schedule section. Larger manuals often have a dedicated “Lubricants and Capacities” appendix. Some manuals include capacity information within each system’s chapter (engine oil in the engine chapter, gearbox oil in the transmission chapter). Check the table of contents or index for “capacities” or the specific fluid you need.

Engine Oil Capacity

The manual lists two capacity values for engine oil: with filter change (the amount needed after a full drain and filter replacement, typically 3.5-7 litres depending on engine) and without filter change (slightly less, typically 0.2-0.5 litres less than the filter change value). Always change the filter with an oil change and use the with-filter value. Some V6 and V8 engines require significantly more oil (up to 10+ litres) – the manual is the reliable source.

The manual also specifies the oil grade (viscosity like 5W-30 or 0W-20), the specification standard (API SN, ACEA C3, dexos1, MB 229.5, VW 502.00, etc.), and any specific brands or certifications required for warranty compliance. Using the wrong oil grade or specification causes engine wear over time.

Transmission Fluid Capacity

Automatic transmission capacity tables often list two values: the drain-and-fill capacity (much less than total – typically 3-5 litres, replaces the fluid that drains from the pan) and the total dry capacity (8-15 litres, only needed after complete overhaul or fluid flush). Understanding this difference prevents overfilling. Manual gearboxes typically hold 1.5-3.5 litres of gear oil.

DSG, PDK, and other dual-clutch transmissions have specific and expensive fluid requirements. The manual will list VW G052 182 or similar OEM fluid specifications – using generic ATF in a DSG destroys the mechatronic unit. Similarly, CVT transmissions need dedicated CVT fluid, not standard ATF.

Coolant Capacity

Cooling system capacity ranges from 5 litres on small engines to 12+ litres on large diesels. The manual specifies the total system capacity (used when completely draining and refilling) and any additional considerations for the heater core or expansion tank. The coolant type specification (OAT, HOAT, Si-OAT, IAT) and mix ratio (typically 50/50 with distilled water) are essential.

Differential and Transfer Case

4WD and AWD vehicles have multiple gear oil reservoirs: front differential, rear differential, transfer case, and possibly a centre differential. Each has specific capacities (typically 0.7-2.5 litres) and specific oil types. Some transfer cases use ATF instead of gear oil – the manual specifies which. Filling with the wrong fluid causes premature bearing and gear failure.

Brake and Clutch Fluid

Brake and clutch systems typically hold small amounts of fluid (0.5-1 litre total) but capacity tables help estimate how much to buy for a full fluid change or bleeding operation. Always buy fresh sealed fluid rather than partial containers, as brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. A 1-litre bottle typically covers a full flush for most passenger vehicles.

Fuel Tank Capacity

The manual also lists fuel tank capacity, useful for calculating fuel economy or determining maximum range. This is typically 40-90 litres for passenger vehicles, larger for utes and SUVs. The specification also includes minimum octane requirements (91 RON regular, 95 RON premium, 98 RON super-premium in Australia) and any restrictions on ethanol content (E10 compatibility varies by model).
