P0700 is a transmission control module (TCM) generic fault code that means the TCM has detected a fault in the transmission system but is reporting it through the engine ECM. P0700 itself does not tell you what is wrong – it is a flag that other transmission codes are stored in the TCM. To diagnose the problem, you need to retrieve the manufacturer-specific transmission codes that accompany P0700.
Why P0700 Appears Alone
Many basic OBD-II scanners only read the powertrain (P) codes from the engine ECM. They do not communicate with the TCM directly. So when you scan the vehicle, you get P0700 with no further information. To get the actual fault, you need a scan tool that can access the TCM module – this means a manufacturer-specific tool, a more capable aftermarket scanner (Autel, Launch, Snap-on, Bosch), or a free smartphone scanner with TCM access via a Bluetooth OBD adapter.
Common Transmission Codes Behind P0700
Once you can read TCM codes, common faults include shift solenoid failures (P0750-P0758 series), torque converter clutch issues (P0740-P0744), gear ratio errors (P0730-P0735 indicating internal mechanical problems or wrong solenoid actuation), input/output speed sensor faults (P0715-P0723), and pressure control solenoid faults (P0745-P0749). Each code has specific test procedures in the workshop manual.
Drivability Symptoms
P0700 alone tells you nothing about what to expect. Depending on the underlying fault, you may experience harsh shifts (rough engagement of gears), slipping (engine revs but power does not transfer), no engagement of certain gears, transmission stuck in one gear (limp mode – usually 3rd gear), torque converter shudder (vibration at certain speeds), or no symptoms at all (fault was intermittent and is no longer active but the code remains in memory).
First Things to Check
Check transmission fluid level and condition first – low fluid causes a wide range of fault codes. Burnt-smelling, dark, or contaminated fluid suggests internal damage. Check that the transmission has the correct fluid type for your vehicle (a previous service may have used the wrong fluid). Check for any external leaks. These cheap checks rule out the easy causes before pursuing more complex diagnostics.
Wiring and Connectors
Many transmission codes are caused by electrical faults rather than mechanical issues. Check the main transmission connector (usually on the side of the case) for corrosion, water ingress, or loose pins. Inspect wiring harnesses where they pass over hot exhaust components or sharp edges – heat damage and chafing are common causes. Look for rodent damage especially on vehicles parked outside or in barns.
Internal vs External Faults
External transmission faults (sensors, solenoids accessible from outside, wiring, connectors) are relatively cheap to fix – parts and a few hours of labour. Internal mechanical faults (worn clutches, broken bands, damaged planetary gears) often require transmission removal and rebuild or replacement, which can be very expensive.
