How to Replace an Ignition Coil: Symptoms and Procedure

Ignition coils convert the battery’s 12 volts into the tens of thousands of volts needed to jump the spark plug gap. When a coil fails, you get misfires, a check engine light with cylinder-specific codes (P0301 through P0308), rough idle, and reduced power. Replacement on modern coil-on-plug systems is typically one of the simpler engine repairs, taking 15-30 minutes per coil on most vehicles.

Symptoms of a Failing Coil

The classic symptoms are misfires – a rough running engine at idle, hesitation on acceleration, and a flashing or steady check engine light with P0300 (random misfire) or P030X where X is the specific cylinder number. Fuel economy typically drops noticeably, and you may notice an unburnt fuel smell from the exhaust. On some engines, a failing coil causes a distinct “stumble” at cruise that feels different from other engine faults. Cold, damp weather often makes coil symptoms worse as small internal cracks in the coil epoxy allow moisture to short the high-voltage output.

Coil-on-Plug (COP) Systems

Most vehicles built since around 2000 use coil-on-plug (COP) ignition, where each cylinder has its own coil sitting directly on top of the spark plug. This eliminates spark plug wires and provides more precise ignition timing. To access the coils, remove the engine cover if fitted (usually pulls straight up off rubber grommets). The coils are visible as small rectangular or cylindrical units with an electrical connector on top.

Replacement Procedure

Disconnect the negative battery terminal (5 minutes wait allows any capacitors to discharge). Unclip the electrical connector on top of the coil – most have a small tab you press to release. Remove the retaining bolt (usually 8mm or 10mm) that secures the coil to the valve cover or engine head. Pull the coil straight up – it may need a gentle wiggle to release from the spark plug boot. The rubber boot at the bottom of the coil grips the spark plug ceramic – if it stays behind on the plug, remove it carefully with pliers or a boot removal tool.

Inspect the removed coil for cracks in the plastic housing, burn marks near the boot, and check the boot for tears or hardening. If replacing all coils, do them one at a time to avoid mixing up wiring or firing order (though on COP systems each cylinder has its own coil so this is less critical than on distributor systems). Install the new coil by pushing it firmly onto the spark plug until you feel the retaining tab click, then torque the mounting bolt to specification (typically 8-12 Nm). Reconnect the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

Spark Plug Consideration

Bad spark plugs cause coils to work harder and eventually fail. If your coil failed and the spark plugs have not been changed at the recommended interval (typically 60,000-100,000 km depending on plug type), replace them at the same time. Do You Replace All Coils?

Opinions vary. If one coil fails at 120,000 km, the others are likely close to failing too. Some mechanics recommend replacing all coils together on high-mileage engines. Others recommend replacing only the failed coil and monitoring the others. On engines where coil access is very difficult (some V-configurations where the rear bank requires intake removal), replacing them all at once during major service saves labour on future failures.

Quality Matters

Cheap aftermarket coils are a false economy – many fail within a year. OEM or premium aftermarket coils (NGK, Denso, Bosch, Delphi) last much longer. On some vehicles (particularly BMW N54/N55 and Ford EcoBoost engines), only OEM coils give reliable service – aftermarket brands often fail early on these known-sensitive engines.
