Preparation and Protection
Cool the engine completely – never spray water on a hot engine (thermal shock can crack manifolds, block heaters, and cause other damage). Cover sensitive components with plastic bags secured with rubber bands or tape. Priority items to cover include the alternator (water intrusion causes premature bearing failure and electrical faults), the air intake or filter box (water in the intake damages the engine), any exposed electrical connectors, the distributor cap or ignition coil packs, and the ECU or fuse box if exposed.

Compressed air (from a portable tyre compressor or dedicated air source) is excellent for blowing water out of crevices and around electrical connectors. Start the engine and let it idle for 5-10 minutes with the bonnet up – engine heat helps evaporate any residual moisture.
Dressing and Protection
Once fully dry, apply a rubber and vinyl dressing to hoses and plastic components. This restores a satin finish, protects against UV damage (important under Australia’s harsh sun), and prevents rubber from drying and cracking. Water-based dressings are less likely to attract dust than silicone-based products. Avoid applying dressing to belts – it causes them to slip.
