Bleeding brakes removes air and old fluid from the hydraulic brake system. Air compresses (fluid does not), so any air in the lines gives you a spongy pedal that travels further than it should. Bleeding is required after any brake work that opens the hydraulic system – replacing pads is not, but replacing calipers, master cylinders, or hoses is. Symptoms That Suggest Air in the System
A soft, spongy brake pedal that sinks slowly toward the floor even with steady pressure indicates air in the lines. Full brake application requiring more pedal travel than normal is another sign. A pedal that firms up after pumping several times, then goes soft again, also suggests air. If air is only in the front lines, you may notice the pedal drops slightly when the front brakes engage first. Fresh air symptoms after a repair usually mean the bleed was incomplete or the bleeder was not sealed properly.
The Correct Fluid
Use only the brake fluid specification listed in your workshop manual – typically DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1, or Super DOT 4 for most modern vehicles. DOT 5 (silicone-based) is NOT compatible with the others and must not be mixed. Fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water from the air), so use a fresh, unopened bottle and reseal the cap between uses. Old fluid that has been open for months has already absorbed enough water to reduce its boiling point significantly.
Bleeding Order
Traditional wisdom says bleed farthest wheel from the master cylinder first (typically rear passenger side), then the diagonally opposite front. However, some modern vehicles with ABS have specific bleeding sequences that MUST be followed to avoid trapping air in the ABS modulator. Your workshop manual specifies the correct order. Common patterns include: RR, LR, RF, LF (traditional) or LR, RR, LF, RF (some ABS-equipped vehicles).
Two-Person Bleed Procedure
The traditional method uses a helper to pump the pedal while you open and close the bleeder screw. Fit a clear hose over the bleeder screw, run it into a catch bottle with a small amount of clean brake fluid at the bottom (submerging the hose end prevents air backflow). Have the helper pump the pedal three or four times and then hold firm pressure. Open the bleeder about a half turn – fluid will flow out and the pedal will sink. Close the bleeder before the pedal reaches the floor. Repeat until only clean fluid with no bubbles comes out.
Check the master cylinder reservoir every few pumps – if it empties, air is drawn into the system and you start over. Top up with fresh fluid as you work. Move to the next wheel in sequence.
One-Person Alternatives
Several methods let you bleed brakes alone. A vacuum bleeder (hand-operated pump like a MityVac) sucks fluid through the bleeder screw with the pedal untouched. A pressure bleeder pressurises the master cylinder reservoir, forcing fluid down through the system when you open each bleeder. A one-way check valve on the bleeder hose lets you push the pedal down and release without air being drawn back in – simple and cheap but slower than the alternatives. Pressure bleeders give the best results for complete fluid changes.
ABS Considerations
ABS modules contain small valve chambers that can trap air. On many modern vehicles, a scan tool must be used to cycle the ABS valves during bleeding to fully purge trapped air. Without this step, the pedal may feel firm on the ground but drop when the ABS activates. If your pedal feels good in a garage but soft during hard stops, the ABS module likely has air and needs a scan-tool-assisted bleed procedure.
