Workshop manuals include detailed wheel alignment specifications for each model and year. These specs guide alignment shops on the correct settings for camber, caster, toe, and other angles. Understanding what these numbers mean helps you check that an alignment was done correctly and lets you identify suspension problems early.
The Three Main Angles
Camber is the angle of the wheel from vertical when viewed from the front – negative camber means the top of the wheel leans inward (toward the centre of the vehicle); positive camber leans outward. Modern vehicles typically use slightly negative camber (-0.5 to -1.5 degrees front, similar at rear) for handling. Caster is the angle of the steering axis from vertical when viewed from the side – positive caster (steering axis tilted toward the rear) provides self-centring after a turn. Toe is the angle the wheels point when viewed from above – toe-in means the front of the wheels point inward, toe-out means outward. Most modern vehicles run very slight toe-in front and rear (often 0 to 0.10 degrees per wheel).
Why Specs Matter
Incorrect alignment causes uneven tyre wear (often costing more in tyres than getting an alignment would have cost), poor handling and steering feel, pulling to one side, and reduced fuel economy from increased rolling resistance. Even small misalignments matter – 0.5 degrees of toe-out per wheel can reduce tyre life by 30% or more.
Tolerance Ranges
The manual lists each spec with a target value and a tolerance range (typically plus or minus 0.25 to 0.5 degrees for camber and caster, and plus or minus 0.05 to 0.15 degrees for toe). Alignment is acceptable as long as readings are within tolerance. Aiming for the centre of the spec gives the most balanced wear and handling. The manual also lists the maximum permissible side-to-side difference – typically 0.5 degrees for camber and caster between left and right – which prevents the vehicle pulling to one side.
Cross-Camber and Cross-Caster
The difference between left and right camber (cross-camber) and left and right caster (cross-caster) determines whether the vehicle tracks straight. The manual specifies maximum cross values – typically 0.5 degrees or less. Excess cross-caster causes pulling toward the side with less positive caster. This is more important than the absolute values for straight-line tracking.
Adjustable vs Fixed Settings
Not all alignment angles are adjustable on every vehicle. The manual specifies which can be adjusted (typically front toe always, front camber sometimes via slotted holes or eccentric bolts, rear toe via toe links, rear camber via shims or eccentric bolts on independent rear suspensions). Non-adjustable angles can usually only be corrected by replacing bent or worn components. Some vehicles have aftermarket camber bolts or kits that add adjustability for performance use.
Pre-Alignment Checks
The manual lists pre-alignment checks – tyre pressure correct, tyre tread depth equal, no worn suspension components (ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings), and ride height within spec. Alignment performed on a vehicle with worn components or low/uneven tyres will not be accurate, and the alignment shop should refuse to align a vehicle until these issues are resolved. A reputable shop checks suspension components before alignment.
Reading Alignment Reports
After an alignment, the shop typically prints a before/after report. Each value is shown with the spec range. Green values are in spec; red values are out of spec. Compare the after values to the manual’s spec – they should be within tolerance and ideally near the centre. The cross values should be near zero. If you have any concerns, the report gives you the data to discuss with the shop or seek a second opinion.
