The fuel pump relay is a small but critical component that controls power to the in-tank electric fuel pump. When you turn the key to ignition, the ECM (or in older vehicles, the ignition switch directly) energises the relay coil, which closes the relay contacts and sends 12V power to the pump. When it fails, the pump does not run and the engine will not start (or it stalls while driving). It is a common but often overlooked no-start cause – and one that frustrated DIY mechanics replace fuel pumps to fix when actually the relay was the issue all along.

How the Fuel Pump Relay Circuit Works

On modern vehicles, the relay receives a control signal from the ECM (typically a ground-side switch on pin 85 or 86 of the relay), and battery voltage on the high-current side (pins 30 and 87). When the ECM grounds the control side, current flows through the relay coil, the magnetic field pulls the contacts closed, and battery voltage flows through to the pump. The ECM keeps the relay energised for 2 to 3 seconds when the ignition is first turned on (the priming cycle), then de-energises it. Once the engine is cranking and the ECM sees crankshaft signal, it re-energises the relay continuously.

Symptoms of a Failed Relay

The classic symptoms include: engine cranks but does not start (no fuel pressure to start combustion), intermittent stalling that resolves after the vehicle sits and cools for 20 to 30 minutes (heat-related relay failure – the contacts open as the relay heats up but reset when cool), no fuel pump priming sound when the ignition is turned on (you should hear a brief 2 to 3 second hum from the tank area), and a fuel pressure test showing zero pressure at the rail with the pump commanded on. Fuel pressure typically should sit between 250 and 400 kPa (35 to 60 psi) on most modern fuel-injected vehicles – check your workshop manual for the exact specification.

Diagnostic Procedure

Start with the easiest test. Locate the fuel pump relay in the under-bonnet fuse and relay box (the cover diagram shows which relay is which). On older vehicles, the relay may be inside the cabin or under the rear seat. Most relays are interchangeable with other identical relays in the box – swap the suspect fuel pump relay with the relay for a non-essential circuit (horn, AC compressor, rear demister) and try to start the engine. If it starts, the original relay was faulty. This is the quickest diagnostic available and costs nothing.

For a definitive bench test, use a multimeter to check coil resistance between pins 85 and 86 (typically 60 to 100 ohms – infinite resistance means an open coil and a failed relay). Check contact continuity between pins 30 and 87 by applying 12V to the coil pins – the contacts should close with an audible click and read near zero ohms. If the contacts are pitted or burnt, the relay is failing and will get worse.

Replacement

Replacement is simple. Pull the old relay straight up out of its socket and push the new one in firmly, ensuring the orientation matches (the relay base is usually keyed so it only fits one way). No tools required on most vehicles. Relays cost between $10 and $40 depending on type. Always carry a spare relay in the boot if you have an older vehicle known for relay failures – a relay swap on the side of the road takes 30 seconds and beats waiting for a tow.

Common Causes of Relay Failure

Repeated cycling under high current, heat from nearby exhaust components, water ingress in the fuse box, and simply age all cause relay failures. If a fuel pump relay fails repeatedly, check whether the fuel pump itself is drawing excessive current (a failing pump pulls more amperage than spec, burning out the relay contacts). The workshop manual lists the expected current draw for the pump.
