How to Inspect Your Cooling System Before Summer

Modern engines run hotter and produce more power than their predecessors, which puts more demand on the cooling system. The cooling system is the single most failure-prone area of a modern car, and a single overheating event can destroy a head gasket or warp a cylinder head. Periodic cooling system inspection catches problems before they cause permanent damage.

Coolant Level and Condition

Check the coolant level in the expansion tank with the engine cold. It should be at or near the cold fill line. Low level means there is a leak somewhere – even a slow leak adds up over time. Check the colour and condition of the coolant. Fresh coolant is bright pink, green, orange, blue, or yellow depending on the type. Brown, rusty, or muddy coolant indicates corrosion inside the system and needs flushing immediately. Floating debris or oil on top of the coolant indicates serious internal failures (head gasket, oil cooler, transmission cooler).

Hose Inspection

Squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses with the engine cold. They should feel firm but slightly flexible. Mushy, soft, or rock-hard hoses need replacement (see our radiator hose guide). Look for cracking, bulging, scuffs, oil contamination, and signs of weeping at the clamp joints. Heater hoses (smaller diameter hoses to the firewall) need the same inspection.

Radiator and Cap Inspection

Inspect the radiator core for bent fins (which reduce cooling), debris (leaves, bugs, dirt) blocking airflow, and any sign of weeping or staining around the tanks where they crimp onto the core. Plastic tanks on aluminium radiators are common failure points – they crack with age. The radiator cap is also a service item. Pressure caps weaken over time and lose their ability to maintain system pressure, which lowers the coolant boiling point. Replace the cap every few years or whenever you flush the system.

Pressure Test

A cooling system pressure tester applies a calibrated pressure to the system and lets you watch for leaks at hose joints, the radiator, the water pump weep hole, the heater core, and seams in the engine. Pressure testing reveals leaks that only show up when the system is hot and pressurised. Most workshops can pressure test for a small fee if you do not own a tester.

Cooling Fan Operation

With the engine running, let it warm up to operating temperature and then let it idle for a few more minutes. The electric cooling fan should switch on. If it does not, the engine will overheat in slow traffic or when stationary. Causes of fan failure include a failed fan motor, a faulty coolant temperature sensor (the ECM does not know the engine is hot), a bad fan relay, or a wiring fault.

Thermostat Operation

A stuck-closed thermostat causes rapid overheating. A stuck-open thermostat causes slow warm-up and the engine never reaches normal operating temperature, which hurts fuel economy and emissions. Both should be addressed. See our thermostat replacement guide.
