Corroded battery terminals are a leading cause of no-start conditions, intermittent electrical faults, and slow cranking. The white, blue, or green crusty buildup that forms on terminals over time is corrosive and electrically resistive – it physically blocks current flow between the battery and the cables. Cleaning terminals takes 10 minutes and prevents many electrical headaches.

Why Terminals Corrode

Battery acid vapour escapes around the terminal seals and reacts with the lead and copper of the terminal post and cable clamp. The reaction products are sulphate compounds that look powdery and crystalline. Once corrosion starts, it grows over time and progressively isolates the battery from the rest of the vehicle. Excessive corrosion can also indicate an overcharging alternator or a failing battery that is venting more than it should.

Symptoms of Corroded Terminals

Slow cranking or hard starting (especially when cold), intermittent electrical faults like dim headlights, the radio resetting, or the dashboard flickering, a no-start condition that resolves itself after wiggling the cables, the battery testing fine on the bench but not in the vehicle, and visible white, blue, or green powder on the terminals.

Cleaning Procedure

Wear safety glasses and gloves – corrosion is mildly caustic and battery acid causes burns. Disconnect the negative cable first, then the positive cable. If the cable clamps are stuck, do not pry against the battery post (you can damage the internal lead connection). Use a battery terminal puller or gently work them free with side-to-side motion.

Mix a tablespoon of bicarb soda with a cup of warm water – this neutralises the acid in the corrosion. Pour or brush this mixture onto the terminals and around the battery posts. It will fizz as it neutralises. Use a wire brush, a battery terminal cleaning brush (a small round brush specifically for this), or a stiff-bristled brush to scrub away the loosened corrosion. Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.

Reassembly and Protection

Apply a thin coating of dielectric grease, terminal protector spray, or even petroleum jelly to the cleaned terminal posts before reattaching the clamps. This barrier prevents acid vapour from contacting the metal and reduces future corrosion dramatically. Reattach the positive cable first, then the negative. Tighten the clamps firmly but do not overtighten – excessive force can crack the battery case or strip the clamp threads. Check that the clamps cannot be twisted by hand once tight.

If Corrosion Keeps Coming Back

If corrosion returns within months of cleaning, the battery may be overcharging (test charging voltage with the engine running, see our battery test guide) or the battery itself may be venting excessively from internal damage and need replacement. Felt terminal protector washers (acid-impregnated to absorb venting) can also help prevent future corrosion.
