When they wear out, you get clunking noises, uneven tyre wear, loose steering, and in worst-case scenarios, a catastrophic separation where the wheel folds under the vehicle. Inspecting and replacing ball joints is essential safety maintenance.

Symptoms of Worn Ball Joints

Clunking or knocking noises from the front end over bumps, uneven inside-edge tyre wear, wandering steering, a vehicle that pulls to one side, and a creaking noise when turning at low speed or going over driveways. To check ball joints, jack up the front of the vehicle with the suspension unloaded (the wheel hanging freely) and grab the tyre at 12 and 6 o’clock. Try to rock it up and down. Any noticeable play usually indicates worn upper or lower ball joints. Rocking it at 9 and 3 o’clock checks tie rod ends and wheel bearings.

Upper vs Lower Ball Joints

Most modern front suspensions use both upper and lower ball joints (double wishbone designs) or just a lower ball joint with a strut on top (MacPherson strut designs). Lower ball joints carry more load and typically wear faster. On load-carrying (weight-bearing) ball joints, even small amounts of play are concerning. On non-load-bearing (follower) ball joints, a small amount of play may be acceptable – your workshop manual specifies the wear limits for your vehicle.

Bolt-In vs Pressed-In Ball Joints

Some ball joints are bolted to the control arm with 3 or 4 bolts, making replacement straightforward. Others are pressed into the control arm and require a hydraulic press or a specialised ball joint press tool to remove and install. Many ball joints sold today come as part of an entire control arm assembly, which is often the easier and more cost-effective replacement for DIY mechanics than trying to press in a new joint. Your workshop manual identifies which type your vehicle uses.

Replacement Procedure

Loosen the wheel nuts, jack the vehicle, support it on jack stands, remove the wheel. Support the lower control arm with a jack stand or hydraulic jack to maintain tension on the spring. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the ball joint stud. Use a ball joint separator tool (a pickle fork or a screw-type separator) to break the tapered stud free from the knuckle. If the joint is bolted to the arm, remove those bolts. If it is pressed in, use a press to remove it and install the new one. Reassemble everything, torque fasteners to specification, and fit a new cotter pin. Get a wheel alignment after the job.

Safety Note

A worn ball joint that separates while driving causes complete loss of steering control at that wheel. The wheel folds under, the vehicle drops, and a crash is likely. If you suspect worn ball joints, get them inspected immediately and do not drive the vehicle until repairs are made.
